Docks Beers and Docks Academy run ‘Open House’, a community initiative to support those in the North East Lincolnshire area who may be feeling lonely or socially isolated.
The project spearheaded by three members of our team; Katie-Lou, Kate and Kay started after the COVID lockdowns, as they became aware of many local people feeling isolated. They knew that for some, going out and meeting new people was very daunting, especially after long periods of isolation. Docks remit has always been to be more than just a brewery and arts venue, so we thought we could help reduce these particular issues with Open House.
Open House at Docks Academy is a free safe haven for all, between 1-8pm on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. It runs continuously throughout the year for anyone who may feel alone, who would like to make new friends or just get out of the house, or for those who simply need to talk or to feel part of a community.
We provide free tea, coffee, refreshments and biscuits. Our small team are there to help you feel welcome and are always happy to sit and chat. We organise free activities every month (these are optional) such as quizzes, crafting, arts, games, music and presentations by local groups. On occasions, we invite local service providers such as mental health teams, carer support services, health and well-being teams etc to the session for individuals who may need assistance with something in particular. But for most attendees, it’s just a chance to pop in somewhere safe and warm, grab a cuppa and socialise with others.
In addition, we provide an area with various information and leaflets regarding support services, wellness and community groups, mental health help etc. We have many events happening in Docks Academy throughout the year such as live music and comedy, and we have information about all of this too.
One of the regular Open House attendees, Greg Morter, commented “Open House has helped me to talk and mix with different people in a relaxed environment. It has boosted my confidence and enabled me to express myself without any pressure.”
In 2023 we welcomed 301 people through our doors, and 99 new people were engaged with. If you (or you know anyone) could do with seeing a friendly face and would like to meet new friends then pop along any time.
Docks Beers covers the majority of the monthly costs of delivering this project, with additional funding and support from Orsted - leading offshore wind developer, and local design and marketing business Source4.
